FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • How fast can someone get to my house?

Call and we tell you the next open slot while you are on the phone. Active leaks and open roofs go first. When the schedule is full we say so instead of promising a window we cannot keep.

  • What does an estimate involve?

We get on the roof and into the attic when there is access, photograph what we find, and write down the price for the work. If you go ahead, that is the price you pay, with nothing added later unless we find hidden damage, show it to you, and you agree to it first.

  • Should I repair or replace my roof?

It comes down to the age of the roof, the condition of the shingles or panels, and whether leaks keep opening in new places. When both are reasonable we give you both numbers and tell you which one we would choose for our own house.

  • How long does a roof last in the Valley?

It depends on the material, the ventilation and the exposure. Twenty years or more is typical for an architectural shingle installed and ventilated properly. Metal lasts considerably longer. South facing slopes and unvented attics age faster.

  • Shingle or metal for a Winchester home?

Shingles cost less up front and suit most homes. Metal costs more, lasts longer, sheds snow and fits older Valley houses well. Which is right depends on the house, the pitch and how long you plan to stay, and we walk through it with you.

  • Why does my roof only leak sometimes?

Usually flashing or a wall joint. Normal rain runs over it, but wind pushes water sideways and uphill into gaps that stay dry the rest of the time. See roof leak repair.

  • What should I do if water is coming in right now?

Bucket under the drip, move what you can, and if the ceiling is bulging drain it through a small hole into the bucket. Stay off the roof and call. See emergency roof repair.

  • Can you put a new roof over the old one?

We tear off. Going over the old roof hides the decking, traps heat and adds weight, and it means the next roof costs more to remove.

  • Will a new roof fix my attic heat and moisture?

Only if the ventilation is corrected with it. We check intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge on every replacement, because a roof over a hot, damp attic wears out early.

  • Do you work on metal roofs?

Yes, new and old. See metal roofing.

  • Which towns do you serve?

Winchester, Stephens City, Front Royal, Berryville, Strasburg and Martinsburg WV, plus the smaller places in between. See the service area page.
