Roof Leak Repair in Winchester, VAWe find where the water gets in, not just where it shows up
A stain on the ceiling tells you where the water ended up, not where it came in. Winchester Roofing tracks leaks back to the source, fixes the cause, and tells you what the water touched on the way down.
Where roofs actually leak
- Flashing where the chimney meets the roof
- Cracked pipe boots around plumbing vents
- Valleys where two roof planes meet
- Skylight curbs and their flashing
- Nail pops pushing up through shingles
- Where a roof meets a wall or a dormer
- Ridge vents and box vents
- Ice backing up at the eaves in winter
How we track a leak
We start inside. The attic shows the path: stained decking, wet insulation, daylight around a vent. Then we go up and check the roof above and uphill of that spot, because water runs along the decking and the rafters before it drips. If the source is not obvious, a controlled water test with a hose finds it.
What to do right now
Put a bucket under the drip and move what you can. If the ceiling is bulging, poke a small hole at the lowest point so the water drains into the bucket instead of spreading across the drywall. Take photos. Stay off a wet roof. If water is coming in fast, see emergency roof repair.
After the fix
You get photos of the repair and a plain account of what we saw in the attic: wet insulation, stained decking, anything that needs to dry out or be replaced. A leak that ran for a season may have damaged the decking, and that is priced in the estimate, not sprung on you afterward.

Roof Leak Repair questions
- Why does my roof only leak in heavy or wind driven rain?
Usually flashing or a wall joint. Normal rain runs right over it, but wind pushes water sideways and uphill into gaps that stay dry the rest of the time.
- The leak stopped, do I still need someone to look?
Yes. The opening is still there. It will leak again in the next storm that comes from the same direction, and the decking stays damp in between.
- Can you fix a roof leak in the winter?
In most cases, yes. Some sealants and shingles need a minimum temperature to bond, so in a cold snap we make the roof watertight first and finish the permanent repair when the weather allows.
